Global warming may cause human-bear conflicts--which often end badly for the bears--to rise, the December 2009 report says.

In 1975, with the grizzly population at an all-time low of 750 to 800 animals in the lower 48 states, the U.S. Endangered Species Act listed grizzly bears as "threatened with extinction" south of Canada. Since then, the population has improved negligibly to 1,500 grizzlies, but much work remains to be done.
