Department of Climate Change behind on environment

The federal government's Department of Climate Change may be at the cutting edge of environmental policy development but it is well behind when it comes to its own effect on the environment.

The department has told a parliamentary committee that its Canberra headquarters achieved only a 2½-star rating on the five-star National Australian Built Environment Rating System and did not comply with the government's policy on energy efficiency in its own operations.

As a result, it is seeking approval to spend $20.5 million fitting out a new building which will have ''state of the art'' green features including passive air handling systems, photovoltaic arrays on the roof and facades and sophisticated energy management and lighting controls.
