THE weather has gone nuts in May . . . snow returned to Britain yesterday as temperatures hit their lowest for the month of May in 17 years.

WILLISTON, Vt. -- The owner of the Adam's Farm, John Adams, said Monday night's low temperatures might have killed his apple harvest.

"In the 22 to 24 range, that's a critical point at which you lose the blossoms," Adams said.

[Warmist] Gov. Doyle on Wednesday requested a federal disaster declaration for ginseng growers in Marathon County after a spring snowstorm collapsed the shade covers that protect the crop from the sun.

"We do have a crisis here," said Athens ginseng grower Ron Krautkramer, who was busy working in the field and trying to save his crops Wednesday.

The University of Maine Cooperative Extension says orchardists will lose 10 to 15 percent of a crop at 28 degrees. At 25 degrees, 90 percent of the crop will be lost.
