Climate Change and Space Junk - Ecocentric - TIME.com
It's a worry: every one of these speeding bits of hardware could potentially damage, or even smash up a working satellite. The latter could create a lot more debris, potentially triggering something called the Kessler Syndrome, in which fragments of a smashed satellite go on to smash more satellites, creating fragments that go on to smash more...and so on.
What does this have to do with climate change? Maybe a lot.
...
The chances that a space collision will unleash the Kessler Syndrome are considered remote for at least the next half-century (although a major collision did happen last year). As the globe continues to warm, though, it appears that those odds will likely have to be recalculated.
