US climate researcher James Hansen accepts Norwegian prize | Earth Times News
Oslo - US climate researcher James E Hansen on Tuesday received the annual Sophie Prize for helping improve "understanding of human-induced climate change" and its potential threat to the planet.2010: Climate Scientists Awarded Prestigious Blue Planet Prize
On accepting the prize worth 100,000 dollars Hansen voiced concern over the exploitation of tar sands in for instance Canada, citing the environmental impact, Norwegian news agency NTB reported.
Hansen has earlier stated that coal mining should be phased out and fossil fuel reserves remain untapped.
Dr. James Hansen, director at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, where he has worked since 1967, and adjunct professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Columbia University, was named as the other awardee.2001: NASA GISS: Research News: NASA Goddard Scientist to Receive Heinz Award
Each recipient is presented with a certificate of merit, a commemorative trophy and an award of 50 million yen (US$550,600 or 372,000 pounds).
Dr. Jim Hansen, Chief of the Goddard Space Flight Center's Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York, N.Y., and one of this year's recipients of a $250,000 Heinz Award, receives his award tonight at a ceremony at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C.

In announcing this year's winners, the Heinz Award cited Dr. Hansen "for his exemplary leadership in the critical and often-contentious debate over the threat of global climate change. The theory that industrial pollution continues to create an atmospheric 'greenhouse effect' or warming has pitted scientist against scientist and politician against politician. "

Hansen - this is a guy that is employed by the Federal government, and he's receiving "gifts" of political nature. He's in a position of influence. Does anyone see anything wrong here!!! What a conflict of interest.
