The message: Cattle evolved over millennia feeding on prairie grass; the switch to corn rations at the end of their lives has been great for meat-industry profitability -- and disastrous for cow health.

In 2008, Dr Rajendra Pachauri, chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, said gradually reducing our meat intake was the “most attractive” way for individuals to cut their carbon footprints.

And last year, government advisor on climate change economics, Lord Stern, urged people to try a vegetarian diet in a bid to fight global warming, controversially suggesting eating meat could one day become as socially unacceptable as drink driving.
