WaPo: Oil spill is a “useful disaster” « Don Surber
The public has been hearing gloom and doom — the sky is falling down — for 40 (expletive) years now and you know what? The public doesn’t buy it.

They see environmentalists as a bunch of pampered nannies who worship the self-important, self-righteous and hypocritical Al Gore seize this calamity as a “useful disaster.”

"These large windstorms are proving to be important to our understanding of how the Amazon works, in terms of carbon storage, biodiversity, and other factors," says global ecologist Gregory Asner of the Carnegie Institution for Science in Stanford, California. If the storms become more intense or frequent, possibly because of climate change, Asner adds, "We can expect big changes to the structure and composition of ecosystems resting in their paths."

The exhibition “Climate Faces — Changing Earth, Changing Lives”, now on display in the Main Gallery of the Visitors Lobby of United Nations Headquarters, will be opened formally in a 6 p.m. ceremony on Wednesday, 14 July.

The exhibition also includes videos submitted in a World Bank Group competition. It unveils the next generation’s optimism and passion for tackling climate change, an urgency summed up by Abhinav Khanal from Dhaka, Bangladesh. “You may say that we can simply move somewhere else. However, the simple fact is, the whole country is vulnerable. There is nowhere to go…” [That doesn't sound very optimistic to me.]
