It's come to this: Environmentalists walk around Lake Superior to raise awareness of threats to it, but don't even mention global warming

"We knew we couldn't leave them a fortune or a lot of property, but we (wanted) to leave them a better Earth," he said. "We're concerned about fresh water. We think that is the big issue for the future."

They also wanted to raise awareness of the big lake and the need to protect it. "But we knew, sitting around in Willow River, nobody would listen to us," he said.

Although both are heartened by the apparent health of the lake, they see many threats: pollution runoff from greater development, invasive species, water diversion and sulfide mining, which has caused significant environmental damage elsewhere.

"We have the potential to destroy one of the most valuable resources we have," Link said.
