"The big concern going forward is the lateness of the crop and whether the frost gets to it before it matures," said Bruce Burnett, director of weather and market analysis for the Canadian Wheat Board. "It looks like the end of this week we're going to get what they call a killing frost so that should end the growing season."
Record low temperatures for the day were tied Monday at coastal locations in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties, the National Weather Service said.Canada: Threat of frost raises hardships for producers
At the Santa Monica Pier, the temperature bottomed out at 55 degrees, tying the record set in 1949.
The temperature hit a low of 66 in Newport Beach, which tied a record set in 1934. At Oceanside Harbor, the temperature was also 66, tying a record set in 1953, according to the weather service.
"The threat of significant frost and freezes will last 10 days and by the end of that period of time, most areas in the Prairies will have frozen, resulting in some damage in crops," said a release from World Weather, a Kansas City, Mo.-based weather centre.
Temperatures below zero could end the growing season, with harder freezes possible in many areas across the Prairies next weekend and into the following week, say World Weather specialists.
Meanwhile, farmers are behind in the harvest.
