Woolly mammoths are thought to have first appeared on the earth 4.8 million years ago and to have finally become extinct at least 3,600 years ago.

However the federal opposition today again ruled out joining the committee, calling the idea “repugnant” and possibly in breach of the parliamentary committee act.
Coalition climate action spokesman Greg Hunt said he rejected Ms Gillard's offer because it required a pre-ordained belief in carbon trading and would cause electricity prices to rise.
“This committee is repugnant because it has a test that someone must sign up to a pre-ordained outcome,” Mr Hunt said. “I am not aware, and we are not aware, of any such belief-test on a parliamentary committee in the past 110 years.
“That appears to be in breach of the parliamentary committee act.”
Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh on Monday made a scathing attack on the United States' "commitment to climate change".
Speaking to Headlines Today Ramesh said that the US has failed to provide political leadership on climate change. He said the US commitment on the issue was not up to the mark.
