“You'll see Republicans constantly refer to the cap-and-trade bill as a tax,” said Isaac Wood, the House campaign editor for Sabato's Crystal Ball, a political analysis newsletter and website that's part of the University of Virginia Center for Politics. “Clearly there are financial elements to it. Given the economy, it's natural that that's how an opponent of the bill would refer to it.”

» Markey: “I voted for the energy bill because it cuts our dependence on foreign oil in half and this is a national security issue that we just can't pay lip-service to,” she said. “Right now we are importing $1 billion a day in foreign oil. Much of this comes from countries that don't share our values. Some of the money goes into the hands of the very terrorists that we are fighting.”
