Temperatures in the Fairbanks area ranged from 30 to 40 below zero in low areas on Wednesday. In the hills, temperatures hovered around 10 below. Lows tonight could reach minus 50.

The pollution has been concentrated by a temperature inversion, when warmer air traps cold air below it. Particulates become trapped in the cold layer near the ground.
Preliminary results of Tuesday’s autopsy indicate the death Monday of 47-year-old Bruce Quillen of Morris was consistent with exposure to the cold weather.
