On thin ice
Derocher believes that the polar bears in western Hudson Bay are on the verge of such a collapse.
Supportive as he is of any proposal to cut greenhouse gas emissions, Derocher worries that the ban on hunting that Amstrup and his colleagues recommend would “be a serious cultural loss for the Arctic aboriginal people.”
With the exception perhaps of caribou, no other animal is as important as the polar bear is in providing food, clothing and revenue from the sports hunt. No other animal looms as large as the polar bear does in Inuit art and stories.
