Snow-swept Ontario: Military helps rescue 237 travellers trapped in vehicles; global warming blamed

Metro - Snow-swept Ontario highway slowly re-opens
SARNIA, Ont. - A dramatic rescue mission on a snow-swept Ontario highway gave way to a vehicle recovery operation Wednesday, as motorists waited in warming centres and homes for the road to be cleared.

Highway 402 eastbound was re-opened one day after provincial police, the military and volunteers took 237 weary travellers — trapped overnight in their vehicles — to safety.

"We'll take a look at how this thing evolved and ask ourselves whether there's anything we might have done better to ensure these kinds of things don't happen," [Premier Dalton McGuinty] said at an unrelated event in Toronto.

"Every once in a while Mother Nature asserts herself and we are humbled," McGuinty said, adding climate change means severe weather is "part and parcel of our new reality."
