You couldn’t have asked for a better snapshot of the chasm that divides today’s so-called expert classes from the mass of humanity than the snow crisis of Christmas 2010. They warn us endlessly about the warming of our planet; we struggle through knee-deep snow to visit loved ones. They host million-dollar conferences on how we’ll cope with our Mediterranean future; we sleep for days in airport lounges waiting for runways to be de-iced. They pester the authorities for more funding for global-warming research; we keep an eye on our elderly neighbours who don’t have enough cash to heat their homes.

The National Weather Service's Sundog measuring site on the northeast side of Prescott set two new records during the cold snap, both for lowest daily high temperatures. The high temperature was only 22 degrees on New Year's Eve and 29 degrees on New Year's Day. Previous records were 31 degrees in 1982 and 30 degrees in 1960, respectively.

BONE-chilling cold swept across north India Monday driving people indoors as many parts of the vast Indo-Gangetic plains reeled under the plummeting temperatures. The severe conditions have claimed 30 lives in Uttar Pradesh, Indian media reported.
According to officials in Uttar Pradesh capital Lucknow, six people died Monday in different parts of the state due to severe cold, taking the season’s toll to 30.
Cold wave grips North India, claims 8 lives in Allahabad
A severe cold wave in north India today left people shivering and claimed eight lives in Allahabad even as Leh town in Jammu and Kashmir froze at minus 20 degrees Celsius.
