If some idiot deliberately makes it harder for you to find a parking spot, will that prevent bad weather?

Parking space management: Remove a spot, reduce global warming? - Environment - MiamiHerald.com
"Parking management is a critical and often overlooked tool for achieving a variety of social goals," according to a new study released Wednesday by the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy in New York.

The study cited improved air quality, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, reduced traffic congestion, improved road safety and revitalized city centers as the key benefits of parking reform.

I just recently discovered that here in the UK, our previous government had this same idea. As I understand it, new housing developments had to be built with too few parking spaces, to discourage car ownership. Unbelievable. Why didn't they go the whole hog and insist that all cars had to be built to be really uncomfortable? Or they could have really gone for it, and insisted that new cars had an unpleasant stench built in. Or a sound system that would only play country music. Or a defective heater. Etc. Etc.

People aren't going to give up their cars. As someone who uses public transit in a city that supposedly has a good transit system, it is simply too inconvenient, with the possible exception of living in London or Manhattan. Even on the relatively rare occasion that a bus will take you where you want to go when you want to go there, it will take at least twice as long as driving.

As usual the greens don't think their ideas through. The obvious consequence of less parking spots is more emissions and congestion, as people reach their destination and then drive around looking for somewhere to park.

Nobody said giving up cars will be voluntarily. The greens have demonstrated all across Europe that they are capable of taxing and regulating people out of their cars. Having a car in Europe is more of a status symbol than ever: it means you can afford the taxes, will most others can't. It's not just to get you into public transportation - they want to get us onto bicycles. Travel to Europe and you'll see how great this is.
