And just because the Eastern United States and Europe are blasted with cold polar air doesn't mean the rest of the world is freezing too.

"You can't take one spot and look at what's going on," Letro said. "The fact is that we really don't know what the impact (of climate change) will be. There's all kind of speculation out there."

The phenomenon in Florida has been "interesting," Trenberth said. But it is part of a "natural pattern of variability" that shows up in his long-range climate model even if everything else is held fixed, said Trenberth. That includes changes in the sun and El Nino and La Nina, two currents in the Pacific Ocean that influence weather in Florida and the United States.

While several national science centers say the Northern Hemisphere is experiencing "unprecedented warming," much of the Southeast, including Florida, has cooled slightly over the last century.

The climate science community is "overselling" its prediction skills, said Roger Pielke, a senior research scientist at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Its failure to "skillfully predict any of the extreme weather patterns we have seen in the past should be a wake-up call to policymakers and the public," Pielke said.
