To many of us outside the world of climate science, the publication of the so-called climategate e-mails cast doubt on the integrity of the key witnesses; when the raw data was declared unavailable for independent examination, our mistrust increased. The result has been a large community of skeptics, a community that includes many reputable scientists. The problem is compounded by the impression that careers and empires have been built on the hypothesis of high climate sensitivity to anthropogenic carbon dioxide (strong positive feedback) and that these witnesses are no longer the objective observers they once were.
