Change could bring extreme cold to UK - Low Carbon Economy
Under increased global warming, the North Atlantic Drift could literally "shut down" as ocean currents change direction. In geographical terms, this change will be almost immediate (about 3 years), with the process starting in 50 years' time or tomorrow.
The effect on the UK climate would be huge. Not only would our summers be cooler and moister than they are at present, our winters would be consistently longer, colder and moister. The weather experienced in the UK during December 2010 could become the norm. This plummeting in our national temperatures would put our climate in a similar position as our longitudinal neighbours in Canada and Russia…
