TONY Abbott has promised a Coalition government would repeal a carbon tax that it inherited - in what Julia Gillard claims is the most reckless political position taken by a national leader in 15 years.

In a day of fierce and personal exchanges and accusations over carbon pricing, Mr Abbott upped the stakes while the government was on the back foot for its refusal to say whether petrol will be in or out of the scheme.

Speaking after shadow cabinet approved the promise to repeal the tax, Mr Abbott said: ''We will oppose it in opposition. We will rescind it in government. If the Coalition wins the next election, you can be absolutely confident that there will be no mining tax and no carbon tax.''
