Fisheries researchers pummelled by rough weather - Local - News - The Telegram
Fisheries researcher George Rose got a rough lesson in climate change recently.
With plenty of fanfare, the Irish research vessel Celtic Explorer left St. John’s on a 24-day research expedition to survey cod populations in the North Atlantic and Labrador Sea.
But instead of researching the ocean, Rose and his team had to spend time hiding from it.
During the worst conditions, the winds were 130 km/h and the vessel faced 12-metre sea swells.
“We were just hammered by one storm after another on that trip; it really hindered the work a great deal,” Rose said. “The only thing we can do in conditions like that is just get out of it.”
...
Rose said the weather conditions were clearly linked to climate change.
