The main point of Spencer's paper is that the observed outgoing radiation flux does not match the climate models. Spencer may have a model to explain the discrepancy, but that is irrelevant. So Dessler, Trenberth, and others concentrate on the irrelevant part and ignore the real story. The real story is the climate models are wrong.

Their whole critical approach is a diversion - watch the thimble.
