Sixty-nine-year-old 'rusted-on' Labor voter Jerry Ruzicka declared the carbon tax was enough for him to switch his vote.

'I don't like it ... this is big bull,' the retired grandfather, who moved from the Czech Republic three decades ago, told Mr Abbott.

Mr Abbott replied: 'We have enough taxes already and we don't need more and there are smarter ways of looking after the environment than this.'

A short time later, as Mr Abbott held a media conference, the driver of a hybrid Toyota Prius shouted: 'Go Tony.'
