Cool summer in Santa Ynez, CA: Auto exhaust blamed

Santa Ynez Valley Journal | On The Ranch
This year, however, is a bit different. My hay manager is complaining that the alfalfa isn’t growing like it normally does. Why? It is because this has been a rather cool summer, not just during the day, but it has actually been somewhat cold at night. Alfalfa requires lots of heat during the day to grow and doesn’t like cold weather at all. In fact, if it gets too cold, the plants will simply go dormant and stop growing altogether until it warms up again. I am hoping that we get our usual warm late August and September, so that the crop doesn’t think we are going into fall and winter so it’s time to shut down.

Even the flowers in the garden are confused. I have summer Oriental lilies at the end of their blooming cycle and lo and behold, I also have a spring flower, a white iris in bloom. I don’t believe I have ever seen this before. I don’t know what this means in terms of climate. Maybe it’s the pollution being spewed by all the through drivers
