Senator Brown says he wants to look into the "bias" of the "hate media" - by which he means News Limited papers and not, say, the overwhelmingly leftist ABC. Or as he put it to the Government: The inquiry should look at "whether the current media ownership landscape in Australia is serving the public interest". As defined by Senator Brown, of course.
His deputy, Christine Milne, last week confirmed News Limited was the target, especially because it had run articles questioning the Greens' sacred position on global warming. "In relation to climate change, the bias is extraordinary," she said.
So what do the Greens have in mind? That sceptical columnists like me be dragged before the thought police? That sure seems the aim of independent MP Tony Windsor, who said the inquiry should focus on "shock jocks" and "in some of the news print, too, some of the blogs need to be identified and looked at".
Hey. I'm in newspapers. I have a blog. What a coincidence.
