European legislation has thrown the future of 750 jobs in the North of England into doubt after Rio Tinto said that it would dispose of one of its smelters there.

Durban is to begin rounding up street children and beggars ahead of the upcoming climate conference, the New Age reported on Wednesday.

The paper quoted the city’s metro police spokesman Eugene Msomi saying all begging street children and adults would be rounded up because they mugged tourists.

[Pielke Jr] The bottom line is that it would be premature to conclude that the drama of Australia's climate debate is over. Regardless of the political fates of Gillard, Rudd, Abbott, Labor, the Coalition, the current tax, the proposed cap and trade system, etc. there is no indication that the policies now moving toward implementation in Australia will do much beyond the margin to change the course of Australia's energy economy. One has to have a very fertile imagination coupled with an unbridled optimism to conclude that the carbon tax is a step in that direction.
