Redford fights criticism, Colbert during U.S. tour

NEW YORK CITY — As the oilsands were lampooned on the popular U.S. comedy show The Colbert Report, Premier Alison Redford told U.S. reporters she believes a “reasonable” public policy debate on energy will win out over hype and campaigns against Alberta’s resources.

The U.S. show that spoofs the news and conservative politics highlighted the regulatory woes with the Keystone XL pipeline on Monday night, speaking with environmental author and activist Bill McKibben about climate change concerns tied to oilsands production.

“They’re getting the oil out of the oilsands, OK,” Colbert told viewers.

“On the upside, doesn’t that leave us nice, clean sand when we’re done, which Alberta will need for its beaches when it is waterfront property in 50 years.

For once, there is good news for the environment: a flurry of international conservation initiatives and environmental research projects were given the green light last week. They were backed with more than half a billion US dollars in grants from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) in Washington DC, the world’s largest funder of environmental projects.

...The GEF is an independent financial organization made up of and funded by 182 member governments, including China, the United States and Vietnam.
