Without a price on carbon, oil will find a way - The Washington Post

So while blocking a pipeline here or there can hamper oil production, it’s certainly not a long-term solution for those who worry about the global-warming effects of carbon-intensive oil sands in Alberta and elsewhere. The only sustainable way to get those emissions under control is with a price or cap on carbon — either a tax or cap-and-trade system. (And if Canada doesn’t want to cap carbon, the U.S. could tax crude imports at the border.) Without a carbon price, oil will always find a way.

WAMC: Scientists: New Yorkers Should Prepare for Radial Climate Changes (2011-11-17)

A team of [junk] scientists says New Yorkers should start preparing for radical climate changes that will bring much hotter summers, snowier winters, devastating floods, and a broad range of other impacts to the environment, communities and human health. WAMC's Dave Lucas has more...

...Among the findings: Global warming is not evenly distributed; because of its northerly latitude, New York has already warmed 2.4 degrees Fahrenheit in the last 40 years more than twice the global average.

In the Catskill and Adirondack mountains, shorter and warmer winters with less snow could hurt ski- and snowmobile-related tourism.
