Warmist Revkin: No longer in full denial mode about the success of climate realists?

March 2009: Climate Skeptics Gather In New York City : NPR
Mr. REVKIN: Basically it's a meeting of self-described climate skeptics. These are - you know, for 20 years, ever since the global warming concept has been evolving in a big way in the science community, there's been a very vocal, mixed array of people who either outright reject the science, who accept that humans are influencing the climate, but it's inconsequential, or in some cases who are paid to be there, to sort of oppose regulations on pollution or emissions, and so it's a mixture. And what I sense this year - there was a little of this last year too - is they're realizing they have such a varied array of scientific explanations for what's going on with climate that they felt the need to sort of sync things up, to square up their own stories in some sense, because otherwise they're in danger of losing credibility.

COHEN: And what do you think has caused this change?

Mr. REVKIN: They're not gaining traction, let's put it that way. They're still out there. There are people on the other side of the issue who have a very extreme view of, you know, the climate becoming unraveled in real time where the science also is maybe not there. If you're trying to make a case to the public in America, if you're not consistent, that's a sign of you may not have reality on your side.

Flower allegedly blooms early in UK: This is allegedly a sign that CO2 might kill us all

Natural signs that show spring comes earlier | Environment | The Observer
Spring is sooner recognised by plants than by men, states the Chinese proverb – a point that has been backed by science. Researchers have found that the behaviour of plants and the animals that feed on them shows spring is arriving earlier every year. It also appears that this advance is accelerating, according to Dr Stephen Thackeray of the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, in Lancaster.

We can't stress this enough: Everyplace is warming much faster than everyplace else

Climate change fastest in S-E Asia
A re-insurance giant has released a study that says that South-East Asia will be feeling the effects of climate change faster than any other region.

This was due to the number of natural disasters that have struck the region over the past decade. Although South-East Asia had been feeling the full effects of flobal warming in the past century, the sharp increase of natural disasters from 100 to 300 annually was evidence of that.

Now think about this for a minute. If you have ANY of: Convection, barometric driven mixing, clouds, water vapor, water droplets; then IR does not dominate. With them all removed, and with the CO2 left in place, we have the full “CO2 Forcing” in effect (but unobscured by other drivers).

And what did we get? A New All Time Record Low.

I’d like to turn this into a whole lot more, but to me it’s clear and done at this point and any “more” is “less” clear.

CO2 is completely swamped by ANY of [ convection, wind, water vapor, clouds / water drops ] and when seen acting on its own can do nothing to prevent record lows from IR radiation from the surface.

There are sidebars and sidelights, but the crux of it is just that. CO2 is a wimp, and can be ignored. Water kicks sand in its face and clouds pee in its beer while the wind gives it a wedgie.

Republicans’ 2010 election triumph will fuel civilization’s demise, Chomsky says | Raw Story
“You could almost interpret [the election] as a kind of a death knell for the species," Noam Chomsky, professor emeritus of linguistics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said in a recent interview.
...
Chomsky explained that the force behind the global warming deniers are the business and energy lobbies, both of whom have vested interests in selling cheap fossil fuels.

"The Chamber of Commerce, the main business lobby, the American petroleum industry and other business lobbies have publicly proclaimed in fact with enthusiasm that they are carrying out campaigns to try to convince the population that global warming is a liberal hoax," he said.

"It's succeeded unfortunately," he added, pointing to the US media's complicity.
...
“If this was happening in some small country, in you know maybe Monaco or something, it wouldn’t matter much, but when it’s happening in the richest, most powerful country in the world – it’s a danger to the survival of the species,” he said.

Chomsky added, “Nobody else is going to do much if the United States doesn’t do a lot, not just some but take the lead. So we’re essentially saying, 'Let’s kiss each other goodbye.'”

A disastrous truth | Climate Etc.
I wholeheartedly agree EXCEPT FOR THE CLAUSE ABOUT “BETTER IGNORE THE SKEPTICS”, and expressed this sentiment in my post “Pakistan on my mind.” The rationale for tying individual (or collective) extreme events to global warming was reinforced by Hurricane Katrina, which became a focusing event for global warming when for the first time the public seemed to understand that a 1 or 2 degree increase in sea surface temperature could be associated with more intense hurricanes (I posted an overview on the hurricane/global warming issue here). The rationale then becomes to use each new disaster as a “teachable opportunity” to build support support for climate change science and policies. The strategy is no longer working, and worse, it is based on the premise that we can actually attribute individual extreme events to global warming (see my previous post on this).

The costs of the EU's Galileo satellite system are still skyrocketing - Telegraph
Criminal gangs have for some time been targeting the EU’s Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), which forces electricity firms and other large concerns to pay £80 billion a year for the right to continue emitting CO2. In 2009, Europol uncovered a massive VAT racket involving carbon permits which had robbed EU taxpayers of five billion euros in real money, one of the biggest frauds in history. In 2010 it exposed the theft of another half a billion euros in Italy alone, with police investigations still continuing in nine other countries, involving raids on hundreds of offices all over Europe.

What is new about the latest revelations, which have led to the suspension of the ETS for at least a week, is that the criminals have moved on to the electronic theft of millions of the permits themselves. Although the fraud has so far been detected only in five countries, the authorities have, as yet, no idea of the true scale of a crime which could threaten the survival of the world’s largest carbon market.

Rex Murphy: Seal hunt pieties die at the Chinese border | Full Comment | National Post
We see in the gesture on the seal hunt how China is indifferent to, or careless of, the inhibitions and moral delicacies of the European community — which has long been showily exercised by the “cruelty” of the seal hunt. Euro-salons and -legislatures also have been the epicenter of the “Stop the Seal Hunt” movement for decades. Whether China’s move saves or revives the ancient Newfoundland hunt, or turns out to provide just a small, token market is not the question here. Rather, it is that China, in this one particular instance, is showing it does not share, is a stranger to, the so-called values that rule in “our” part of the world.

China doesn’t care what Greenpeace, or the WWF, or aging sitcom starlets think about the seal hunt, or about anything else. Judging from its intentions in the matter of building coal-fired power stations, China is determinedly out of sync with some of the other infatuations of the West, the great pieties over global warming being the most illustrious example.

Wind farms cause far more damage than they fix | Herald Sun Andrew Bolt Blog
Bring on that inquiry, and investigate the issue from the ground up. Is global warming really man-made? Is it actually a danger overall? What difference would our wind farms make anyway? 'Hot,' by Mark Hertsgaard: review
Hertsgaard warns that the world she and all her generation must confront as adults will be virtually unlivable unless the United States, China and the other major industrialized nations begin to deal with global warming with the extreme urgency most have rejected so far.

Hertsgaard has traveled far, from Western Europe to Bangladesh, to Africa and China, and he has found clear evidence that the effects of climate change are already pervasive everywhere. He has delved deeply into the most recent scientific evidence from the U.N. International Panel on Climate Change, and relies heavily on the conclusions of James Hansen at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, who, however passionate he may be, is one of the finest climatologists in the world.

Right now, Hertsgaard notes, the consensus of climate scientists is that if the world's emissions of greenhouse gases persist unchecked, global temperatures will increase by 9 degrees Fahrenheit over the preindustrial era before 2100 - and "the Earth will be hotter than at any time in the past 50 million years."

Polar Bear Quota Increased
Polar bear hunting season has started on Baffin Island almost a month earlier than usual. This year, the Inuit will harvest up to 32 males and nine females up from the usual limit of 16 males and seven females. The Davis Strait population of polar bears is one of the few that all parties (NGOs, science and Inuit) agree is increasing.

The increase in the Davis Strait population is both on account of changing ice patterns/good ice seasons in the eastern Arctic but also from an explosion of seal populations. I have heard that since the seal harvest was reduced in Newfoundland/Labrador that Harp Seal populations have not only increased dramatically in that area but have spread north.

T.J. Rodgers: Just Say No to Subsidies and Global Warming : Greentech Media
He warns investors, “Run like hell when you hear ‘green jobs, green economy, double bottom line or carbon tax.’ “
---
Palm Springs, California -- T.J. Rogers is the Founder and CEO of Cypress Semiconductors, a force in Silicon Valley, an early equity investor in SunPower and a vintner. He spoke on Thursday morning at the CleanEdge/IBF cleantech investor forum and was introduced as "an unabashed free-market capitalist."

Rodgers is a wry, in-your-face speaker. He walked into the lions' den of green investors and environmentalists at this event to debunk the "religion of climate change" and warn the crowd to not get too reliant on government subsidy programs.

He does not accept the widely accepted dogma of human-induced global warming nor the data of global warming adherents.
...
Rodger's cited surveys that indicate that the average consumer does not care about global warming. He railed against environmentalists converging on the climate talks in private jets and limousines, calling environmentalism "a secular religion, a non-god-based religion." He also chastised the press, saying, "The press is uncritically on their side."
...
Mr. Rodgers' incendiary talk was ill-received by many in the large, green-leaning crowd -- there was some less than complimentary post-speech chatter.
Freezing Winters In Europe Could Be The Norm
Colder winters could become the norm in Europe over the next 20 to 40 years, US-based forecaster Weather Services International said Tuesday.

“We have recently noticed a change in [weather] patterns back to what we had in the 1950s and 1960s in Europe... We’ve had three cold winters in a row in the UK,” WSI’s chief meteorologist Todd Crawford told Platts.

“We believe there is a strong likelihood that it’s going to hang around for the next 20 to 30 years.”

India has once again challenged the UN's climate science body, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) with a new scientific paper that suggests human-induced global warming is much less than what the R K Pachauri-led IPCC claims.

U R Rao, former chairman of Indian Space Research OrganisationThe paper identifies the reduced impact of Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCRs) on the formation of low clouds over earth in the last 150 years as the main cause for global warming. The paper is authored by U R Rao, former chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation, and was released by environment minister Jairam Ramesh.

Where is the rejoicing??? We have heard years of whines and complaints about the Arctic ice melting and (wipe my eyes free of the tears) how this is killing the (wipe them again, sob, sniff) pretty polar bears.

But when the Arctic Ice is, as it is now, ABOVE the long term average, there is SILENCE, not cheering from those most vocal about saving the (gotta wipe a few more tears here, sigh, wait a minute while I compose myself).....polar bear who can't fend for himself if we don't (loud crying here) stop using fossil fuels. Could it be that the lack of cheering is because polar bears are really only a pawn in their political gamesmanship? The polar bear isn't what they are worried about, it is political control.

One thing is certain: If the global economy does succeed in making the transition to renewable energy, the face of the planet will be significantly changed, with solar energy farms and wind turbines a common feature of many landscapes and seascapes.

“If 10 percent of the U.S. electricity generated in 2009... were to be produced by large wind farms, their area would have to cover at least 22,500 square kilometers, roughly the size of New Hampshire,” writes environmental scientist Vaclav Smil of the University of Manitoba in his book, Energy at the Crossroads. “These new energy infrastructures would have to be spread over areas ten to a thousand times larger than today’s infrastructure of fossil fuel extraction, combustion and electricity generation…. This is not an impossible feat, but one posing many regulatory, technical and logistic challenges.”

Or more likely different bits of government.

But more by way of donations than membership fees is all there is to this story, ladies and gentlemen. The rest is just innuendo, in a Guardian-y sort of way.

Calif. Plants Put a Wrinkle In Climate Change Plans : NPR
Scott Loarie, a researcher at the Carnegie Institution of Science on the Stanford University campus, says most of the research into this topic has been focused on temperature trends, "because we know the most about temperature. Pretty much all our evidence shows the earth will get hotter, and there's very little dispute about that. We don't know very much about precipitation."

Loarie says the new study underlines just how important precipitation can be. Unfortunately in many parts of the world, scientists simply can't say whether climate change in the long run will bring more moisture or more drought. Loarie says California is a case in point —the various climate forecasts disagree.

"So it's really a crapshoot in California whether we're facing a drier or a wetter future," he says.
AM - 2010 one of the hottest on record 21/01/2011
BOB CARTER: The question is not whether it causes warming, the question is how much warming? Since 1998 we've had three warm years - 1998, 2005 and 2010 - and each of those years is associated with an El Nino event which causes or is related to the warming. Okay, but there's no trend, 2010 is not significantly warmer in any way than 1998.

So we have a warm period over a period of 12 years. Over those same 12 years we have a five per cent increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The carbon dioxide is supposed to cause more warming. Well this data that we've just discussed tells you that human carbon dioxide emissions are not causing dangerous global warming, indeed they're not causing any warming at all at the moment.

NASA Targets Children with ‘Climate Kids’ Website « ClimateQuotes.com
There is an obvious questions to be asked here. Why do we need federal agencies to create programs which educate children about climate change? Even if we ignore that question and accept the role of federal agencies as educators, we still are left with a completely one-sided presentation. There is no mention in the NASA site of uncertainties. There is practically no timescale presented to give context. The site urges children to pick certain 'green' careers over others. The positives of renewable energy are praised, with no mention of the drawbacks. Whether or not you believe this site should even exist (with taxpayer funding), certainly we can all agree the issues presented need to be balanced. There is no balance on the NASA Climate Kids website. I'd wager that if all references to NASA were removed, the site would be indistinguishable from an environmentalist site.

In cold weather, can you save the world from overheating by driving a car that's fossil-fueled but is carrying a battery that weighs over 400 pounds?

GM Says Chevy Volt Passes Winter Test | PersonalFinanceBulletin.com
Chevy is suggesting that to minimize the drain on the lithium ion battery, during cold weather conditions; a “smart-phone” would allow remote starting of the car, while still plugged in. This would enable the Chevy Volt to draw power from the grid, while the inside is heated. The battery would then stay fully charged.
...Another energy saving feature is that the heated seats in the Volt, do not use as much power as heating the air, which will benefit the driver and passengers.

The Chevy Volt is designed to travel for about 35 miles, from one charge of its 16Kwh battery. However, in cold conditions, that figure will be reduced. The vehicle comes with a 1.4 liter, 84 horsepower engine, able to provide 344 miles on one tank of gas and give extra heat.

The maximum speed of the Volt listed at 100 miles per hour, has battery weighing 435 pounds, which powers an electric-drive unit.
IEA lauds unconventional gas reserves - UPI.com
PARIS, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Supplies of natural gas could last more than 250 years if Asian and European economies follow the U.S. unconventional reserves, the IEA said.
Discoveries fuel China's resource security
BEIJING - Chinese geologists have detected "super-thick" oil and gas-bearing stratums in the northern part of the South China Sea and identified 38 offshore oil and gas-bearing basins, a senior official said on Saturday.

The outskirts of Songliao Basin in Northeast China, Yin'e Basin in North China and Qiangtang Basin on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau have also been found to have rich oil and gas resources, Wang Min, vice-minister of land and resources, said at a national conference in Beijing.

In addition, 192.7 billion tons of coal resources have been found in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, and four 10,000-ton sandstone-type uranium mines have been located in Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia, he said.

Wang said these latest discoveries, particularly those at sea, have given direction for China's future resource exploration.

Again, if the science is so settled, why are scientists still trying to "understand the contribution of natural versus anthropogenic causes of climate change"?

Improved Measurements of Sun to Advance Understanding of Climate Change - US News and World Report
WASHINGTON—Scientists have taken a major step toward accurately determining the amount of energy that the sun provides to Earth, and how variations in that energy may contribute to climate change.
...
The new findings give confidence, the researchers say, that other, newer satellites expected to launch starting early this year will measure total solar irradiance with adequate repeatability—and with little enough uncertainty—to help resolve the long-standing question of how significant a contributor solar fluctuations are to the rising average global temperature of the planet.
...
The new work will help advance scientists' ability to understand the contribution of natural versus anthropogenic causes of climate change, the scientists said. That's because the research improves the accuracy of the continuous, 32-year record of total solar irradiance, or TSI. Energy from the sun is the primary energy input driving Earth's climate, which scientific consensus indicates has been warming since the Industrial Revolution.
