The Current Wisdom: The Lack of Recent Warming and the State of Peer Review | Patrick J. Michaels | Cato Institute: Commentary
There are two reasons why we think it is wrong for Kaufmann et al. to attribute a reduced rate of global warming to Chinese sulfates:

1) China's cooling sulfates do not readily make their way into the Southern Hemisphere, yet, from 1999-2010, temperatures actually fell there, while they rose in the Northern Hemisphere. This is exactly the opposite of what should have happened if sulfates are exerting a relative cooling primarily in the Northern Hemisphere

2) Chinese coal consumption increased in 2009 and 2010 (in fact, 2010 had the biggest year-over-year increase recorded) — yet, the global temperature rose sharply in 2009 and in 2010. Because Kaufmann's climate model responds instantaneously to sulfates (as opposed to a decades-long lag to adjust to carbon dioxide changes) this is contrary to his hypothesis.

It seems incredible that our parliamentarians are going to vote on a tax on which they haven’t been clearly or officially told as to who the targeted carbon-tax-payers will be. And they haven’t been clearly or officially told, how this tax will filter down to affect an added cost burden upon the entire population.

In a letter to the Shadow Minister for Climate, Greg Hunt, this week, Minister Combet confirmed that the list would remain secret.

I can’t imagine why — can you?
Political Science
A similar dynamic is at play now, concerning the issue of global warming. The science underlying much of the speculation is subject to question and peer review and much remains unsettled. Possibly the worst thing that could have happened for the establishment of subject matter credibility on the issue of whether anthrogenic global warming occurs or not was Al Gore making a movie about it. The sorts of people who didn’t like Al Gore very much — and bear in mind that in the United States, that was about half the population — recognized policy advocacy coming from the other tribe, and rejected it and everything it was based on out of hand. Actual scientific critique of the theories in An Inconvenient Truth were and still are offered as “proof” that the science described in the movie was bad. Defenders of global warming theory, in turn, view any criticism of what they have to say as “denialism” and reject other evidence out of hand.

Demand an end to alarmist reporting | Herald Sun Andrew Bolt Blog
In fact, sceptics are growing in number, not falling; predictions of sea level rises now seem to have been greatly exaggerated; ice loss in the Arctic has not worsened in four years; no one denies the climate changes; and this is not a “carbon tax” but a tax on carbon dioxide that will not change the temperature at all. And the climate models predicting regional effects of any warming have proved near useless, as a National Technical University of Athens study has demonstrated.

Warmist Ted Scambos: Arctic sea ice minimum this year could be 20,000 Manhattans bigger than 2007's minimum; this measurement may be the "best" evidence that trace amounts of CO2 are dangerous

Benchmark Arctic Melt Approaches 2007 Record | Business | The Moscow Times
After a recovery toward the end of the month, an all-time low is "an outside possibility," said Walt Meier, an NSIDC scientist.

"It will be another low year, very likely one of the five lowest," Meier said Friday in an e-mail. "One year doesn't say too much in and of itself, but the long-term downward trend and the series of very low years is indicative of a thinner ice cover and warming temperatures."

The Arctic ice typically melts until September, before freezing again through March. Scientists at the Boulder, Colorado-based center say the declining ice pack is a harbinger of global warming. By 2030 there may "consistently" be summers where little or no ice remains on the ocean, Meier said.

"Arctic sea-ice decline is perhaps the best evidence around that something truly unusual is happening to our climate," Ted Scambos, another NSIDC scientist, said in an e-mail. "Historical records and changes in high Arctic coastal areas that have been icebound for several thousand years indicate that this is not just 'a bad decade to be ice,' but something outside the normal range of climate."

The lowest ice extent recorded in data dating back to 1979 was the 4.1 million square kilometers posted on Sept. 16, 2007. This year's lowest point will probably be 4.3 million to 5.3 million square kilometers, according to Scambos, who said it was a "personal estimate."
...
Antarctic sea ice, which is much more driven by the wind, is "slightly" below the average for this time of year, according to Scambos.
...In the Arctic, winds from the south can force ice northward and compress it, which was a "big factor" in 2007, Scambos said.

This year, "it would take a major shift of winds, or warming, to really break" the record since satellite measurements were first taken in 1979, Scambos said. Still, the trend remains downward because of warmer summers, he said. "As summers have warmed, old ice has melted, and less and less ice of more than a few years old has been retained. Old ice is thick ice and can survive one warm season."

Global warming facts may not hold water | global, shows, hold - Our view - Portales News-Tribune
Spencer’s team found that data show more heat escaping into space than the IPCC has predicted, which means less is getting trapped to overheat Earth. Reports say the new findings confirm previous heat-loss data recorded by other satellites. Forbes reports that NASA has a 25-year record of real data that contradict IPCC’s dire predictions of an atmosphere that won’t let enough heat escape.

Global warming fundamentalists refuse to believe these inconvenient truths. One critic said we should not blindly accept two decades of “imperfect satellite data.” Yet we are supposed to embrace the IPCC’s predictions as facts.

Sea Ice and Polar Bears!
July 27th, 2011 bsesadmin...
After arriving in Longyearbyen to see our first midnight sun we were all so relived to see our tents set up and waiting. I think we must of all dreamt of Polar bears because the next day was eagerly waiting for the ice flows to break up so we could move on to base camp. There was a P.bear sighting across the fjord about a mile away. Unfortunately a Westerly wind and freak climatic events have led to an unprecedented amount of ice in the fjord meaning we are marooned here for the time being. Despite this everyone was in good spirits because we encountered another P.bear floating on the ice, this time we were lucky enough to borrow an kind Norwegian guides telescope to see it properly. After that experience I can say for sure that everyone dreamt of P.bears that night. The ice flows are still dominating the fjord and our movements.

Mr Rouse argued that the effects of climate change was driving hungry bears into more populated areas.

He claimed the world's largest land carnivore would always be a danger to humans but that that was no excuse to seek control of its dwindling numbers.

He added: "It is climate change that has driven away the pack ice early, leaving the bears a much longer period in which to survive until it returns.

"As we lose more ice then the chance of encounters with humans is only going to increase as desperate polar bears are forced into human areas in search of food.

But perhaps a dramatic yet not quite catastrophic event could act as a wake-up call? I'm at a loss to come up with examples that fit into that category.
...
One possible candidate: a mass die-off of most polar bears.

Catastrophic? For Arctic fauna, yes; for the planet, debatable. Dramatic? Here's hoping.

* Think ice skater, whose spinning speed increases as she pulls her arms closer and slows down as she extends her arms. The same happens to the planet: As polar ice melts, water distributes to the equator, expanding the planet's bulge and slowing its rotation -- by fractions of a second, but amazingly it is already measurable. And we know it's happening at an increasing rate.

THE HOCKEY SCHTICK: Professor inadvertently explains why greenhouse theory is wrong
Professor David Archer of the University of Chicago has posted You-tube videos of his 10 week lecture series for non-science majors on climate change. In lecture 5, The Greenhouse Effect, Archer uses the Stefan-Boltzmann equation to calculate the supposed temperatures of Venus, Earth, and Mars with and without a greenhouse effect. Archer's calculations show the greenhouse effect on Venus is wildly underestimated by 415C (a factor of 36) and wildly overestimated on both Earth (by 23C) and on Mars (by 19C) in comparison to actual observed temperatures. This is despite the fact that CO2 levels are very high and virtually the same on Venus and Mars (around 96%) and only trace (0.039%) on Earth. Archer says in the lecture that one would have to assume the Venus atmosphere behaves like multiple panes of glass in order to obtain an answer near the observed temperature, yet on both Earth and Mars one would have to assume the atmospheres behave like much less than one pane of glass. Leaving aside the fact that no atmosphere behaves like a pane of glass, climate scientists cannot claim that the greenhouse theory comes close to a unified explanation of temperature on any of these 3 planets. The simple fact is the adiabatic lapse rate (effect of pressure with altitude) fully explains the temperature profiles on all 3 planets without any need to invoke a supposed 'greenhouse effect.' See Shattering the Greenhouse Effect and Venus: No Greenhouse Effect.

Arctic update

Our studies show that there are great natural variations in the amount of Arctic sea ice. The bad news is that there is a clear connection between temperature and the amount of sea ice. And there is no doubt that continued global warming will lead to a reduction in the amount of summer sea ice in the Arctic Ocean. The good news is that even with a reduction to less than 50% of the current amount of sea ice the ice will not reach a point of no return: a level where the ice no longer can regenerate itself even if the climate was to return to cooler temperatures. Finally, our studies show that the changes to a large degree are caused by the effect that temperature has on the prevailing wind systems. This has not been sufficiently taken into account when forecasting the imminent disappearance of the ice, as often portrayed in the media," Funder says.

Arctic melting brings benefit - UPI.com

Ice in the arctic has been declining more each summer, and even the oldest ice in the arctic, which is the thickest and most resistant to melting, has begun to dwindle.

"This is man-made; there seems to be little doubt in that," Serreze said. "It would be reversible if we were to do something about our carbon dioxide emissions, [but] I don't see much of a fat chance in hell we're going to see any change here. We're going to have to adapt."

Climate change in the area will cause rising sea levels, loss of habitat for Arctic fauna, drinking water shortages, territorial disputes over newly open waters and more, Serreze said.

However, he added, a benefit of the climate change in the arctic is that warmer winters and springs will lengthen growing seasons and perhaps allow for farming in areas where it previously was impractical.

While there, the party was attacked by the bear and then shot. Had there been no climate change, the party would not have been there, and the polar bear would not have been shot. "When you go and talk to any audience about climate, you hear them washing back at you the same crap over and over and over again," he continued. "There's no longer a shared reality on an issue like climate even though the very existence of our civilization is threatened. People have no idea! And yet our ability to actually come to a shared reality that emphasizes the best evidence. It's no longer acceptable in mixed company, meaning bipartisan company, to use the goddamn word climate. It is not acceptable. They have polluted it to the point where we cannot possibly come to an agreement on it." Gore lamented the diminished role that reason and fact-based analysis play in modern U.S. politics.

Cleaning Two Billion Solar Panels

A tiny layer of dust can drastically affect the light-harvesting ability of solar cells – just a few grams per square metre can cut the efficiency in half

Update on a Polar Mystery

Also in the very odd department, consider how AAAS Science Insiderresponds to this news:
"Polarbeargate" may not be the gold mine that climate change denialists had hoped for.
AAAS, Climate change denialists?Really?  And people wonder why leading institutions of science have been diminished in the eyes of many people (the most fervent partisans excepted).

Arctic ice loss has been much worse historically: Study

The meltdown underway in the Arctic is remarkable, but an international team of beachcombers has uncovered evidence it's been much worse before.

Professor George Taylor: Man-made Climate Change Skeptics Aren't a Fringe Group [Michigan Capitol Confidential]

CC. There are those who describe climatologists who don't believe in man-made climate change as being on the fringe. Is that true?

"Absolutely not. It's very much in the mainstream now. There are many, many climatologists who are skeptical about it (man-made climate change). I don't know if it's more than 50 percent or not. But in science that really doesn't matter. Science has nothing to do with who has a consensus or a majority.

Pew, A Partisan Big Green Group Does "Payola" To Assure Loyal PhD's Advocacy

Left/liberal/progressive/Democrat oriented groups just can't leave the proven scientific process and methodologies alone. They literally have to "buy" their "science" by financially contributing to scientists who will then likely perform the left's advocacy work...

Coffee Jumps on Brazil Frost Concern; Cotton, Orange Juice Fall

An overnight cold spell may have caused frost to develop in some growing areas in Brazil's Parana state, possibly hurting yield potential for next year's crop, state agricultural analyst Adriano Nunomura said by telephone.

Your Hamburger: The Newest Cause of Global Warming - Amy Ridenour's National Center Blog - A Conservative Blog

The Environmental Working Group (EWG), the Washington special interest outfit that pioneered such advancements as the "cell phones cause cancer" hysteria, is back and now they're going after beef. The EWG hasreleased a report calculating the carbon footprint of beef products and their findings are very sobering. Er, maybe not

Arctic Expedition Goes Terribly Awry – One Youth Killed By Polar Bear

According to Der Spiegel, the island is inhabited by about 2500 people and 3000 polar bears.

The BSES is a non-profit UK-based youth development charity. Founded in 1932 by the late Surgeon Commander G Murray Levick, a member of Scott's final Antarctic Expedition of 1910-13, BSES is one of the longest running organisations of its type.

Polar bear kills are treated like potential murders

Expeditions are normally provided with firearms for protection. But as Der Spiegel reports, shooting a polar bear is legally risky – no joke:

If a polar bear is killed on the archipelago, then it automatically leads to a trial. In this case the authorities assume the role of defence attorney for the dead bear."

Bill McKibben: Why Cleantech Should Join the Fight Against Tar Sands

developing the tar sands without accounting for CO2 is about idiocy and influence, not, surely, about facts.

Fuels They Don't Want-Fraudster Al

David Robert's at Grist reports on anincredible story: "One recent bit of Republican brazenness deserves to be called out, though. The military has said that it does not want to consider high-carbon fuels among its future options. Congressional conservatives and fossil-state Democrats are attempting to tell the Pentagon, no, you must consider high-carbon fuels." "In short, conservatives are disagreeing with the considered judgment of the military on the national security implications of fossil fuels. One might even accuse them of hating our troops." Green McCartney's Gas Guzzler - National Review Online

"Some people don't believe in climate warning — like those who don't believe there was a Holocaust," he told London's Sun newspaper.

So what was McCartney doing tooling around Detroit in that notorious death-camp vehicle, the 17 mpg Chevy Suburban last month?

Taxpayers Get Hosed on Duke Energy's Wind Farm Buying Spree | National Legal and Policy Center

Schleede also explains how Duke Energy and Rogers's fellow rent seekers benefit from the Federal Production Tax Credit, Investment Tax Credits or Production Tax Credits, additional state subsidies for utilities, and Department of Energy subsidies such as research and development grants and contracts. This, Schleede says, transfers "hundreds of millions of dollars annually from the pockets of ordinary taxpayers and electric customers to a few large corporations that own wind farms…."

Those deadly cute polar bears

After arriving in Longyearbyen to see our first midnight sun we were all so relived to see our tents set up and waiting. I think we must of all dreamt of Polar bears because the next day was eagerly waiting for the ice flows to break up so we could move on to base camp. There was a P.bear sighting across the fjord about a mile away. Unfortunately a Westerly wind and freak climatic events have led to an unprecedented amount of ice in the fjord meaning we are marooned here for the time being

Naming Names: Marine Experts Tainted by Activist Cash

Is it really in the public interest for the line between advocacy and science to become blurred in this manner?

Below is the complete list of marine experts (Pew's term) who accepted this activist cash. Take a minute to scan it. It contains an awful lot of people whom the public is likely to regard as neutral, objective experts. There's a PhD attached to their name, after all.

But please also note that these people are standing shoulder-to-shoulder with full-blown political activists.

German Scientists Compute CO2 Climate Sensitivity At Only 1.1°C – “Alarmist Prognoses Fully Inappropriate”

The effect is harmless (to the contrary, CO2-increases and slight global warming are beneficial for man and thus desirable) and show that the overly alarmist prognoses for future climate developments as fully inappropriate."

Scientists Will Find Whatever They Expect To Find

In April, 1888 a massive flood on Mars inundated an area the size of France, cut the polar ice cap in half, and joined the two Martian seas. Global warming was rapidly destroying the martian ice caps. The consensus of leading astronomers around the world agreed.
