The warming from 1915 to about 1940 is generally believed to be due to a slight increase in solar output and a reduction in volcanism. The recent warming from 1975 is due to the build-up of greenhouse gases, as they begin to dominate over sulphate aerosol releases. The slight cooling from 1940 to 1975 is thought to be due to industrial development (using lots of dirty coal) increasing aerosol emissions.

ALL the 20th century temp changes, the trend, are due to the fact that we are coming out of the Little Ice Age, LIA. It's only natural.
It's funny how PJones in confidential private emails has a ready explanation for every little up and down drift in the temp, some of which he publicly dismissed (solar variability), but he doesn't even mention the fact that recovery from the LIA was what was clearly driving the whole shebang.
Note: "is thought to" is code for, "the thing that could best fit my theory upon which my income depends is..."
