The first half of the 20th century was a little bit rough (WWI, WWII, The Dust Bowl, Polio, Stalin, Mao, the worst tornado, flood and hurricane in history, etc.)

However, the trauma of the last fifty years was vastly worse. Almost everyone starved to death (Ehrlich) – the UK ceased to exist (Ehrlich) – Manhattan drowned (Hansen) – the polar ice caps disappeared, all the Polar Bears​ ate each other or mated with Brown Bears, and Playstation got hacked.

Later Gingrich fielded a question from a person in the audience about one of the centerpieces of the attack ads - a 2008 global warming advertisement he shot with Democrat house leader Nancy Pelosi.

He said agreeing to the Pelosi ad "was stupid," but said he was interested in representing a conservative solution to the environment.

"I think that conservatives ought to be pro-environment in the broad sense that all of us want to have clean air and clean water and want to have national parks and want to have diversity of species. And I don't think we should walk off and allow liberals to claim to be the only people who care about the environment," Gingrich said. "That was the reason."
