THE Department of Climate Change - in charge of overseeing the controversial carbon tax - is undertaking an expensive branding exercise.

The bill for a Canberra advertising firm to undertake "brand and identity provision" has soared from $41,167 to $200,000 within months. With branding work for the department to continue until June, the opposition yesterday questioned why the department needed such services from an advertising company.

The company is expected to produce graphic designs as part of its branding work but a spokesman for Climate Change Minister Greg Combet was unable to access information yesterday as the department was closed.
