American Physical Society president: Our statement does not declare "that the human contribution to climate change is incontrovertible"

American Physical Society Responds — Letters to the Editor - WSJ.com

The APS statement is unequivocal. It notes that "global warming is occurring." And the commentary states that "while there are factors driving the natural variability of climate (e.g., volcanoes, solar variability, oceanic oscillations), no known natural mechanisms have been proposed that explain all of the observed warming in the past century." The statement does not declare, as the authors of the op-ed suggest, that the human contribution to climate change is incontrovertible.

My coment at the WSJ: The APS statement on anthropogenic global warming is unambiguous about its belief in human causation. Dr. Byer claims no known natural process has been proposed that explains 20th century warming. Apparently Dr. Byer doesn't read AIP's flagship physics journal, Physical Review Letter, because Svensmark's explanation of the Sun's effect on cloud cover via its modulation of galactic cosmic rays was published in several peer-reviewed journals including Physical Review Letters. Svensmark explains not only 20th century warming but other more significant climate change events in Earth's history. I recommend that Dr. Byer read Calder and Svensmark's book "The Chilling Stars" .

Why does the APS feel the need to make a statement on this issue in the first place? Has Dr. Byer never heard of the null hypothesis?
