And it's also shaken loose a claim by the Finance Minister that the Government needs the revenue - when in fact we should be judging the tax by its effect on jobs and its non-effect on the climate:

FINANCE Minister Penny Wong has warned that Kevin Rudd's plan for an early move to a floating emissions trading scheme could have "a very negative effect" on the federal budget.

So this is a tax we must have, regardless of the impact on jobs, because it would hurt the Budget to cut it.
