EU climate [hoax] chief braced for backlash - FT.com

Her chief focus has been to persuade executives and politicians that climate policies can also be good business by improving efficiency and creating jobs.

“What I’m trying to do is try to make it clear that this is not an issue that should be parked in the corner,” Ms Hedegaard said. “It should be something that corresponds with the macroeconomic challenges, and corresponds with our competitiveness, and corresponds with our innovation agenda.”

...Even as she confronts the US and China, one of Ms Hedegaard’s toughest challenges is emerging from within the EU itself: Poland. For the second time in eight months, the coal-dependent member state has vetoed a long-term “roadmap” to reduce the bloc’s carbon emissions after 2020 – essentially stalling its climate policy.

The veto came in spite of considerable arm-twisting, and has been a bitter setback for Ms Hedegaard. The commissioner is turning her attention to new legislative proposals to improve energy efficiency – and hopes that the Poles will give their support.
