The Hunger Games: The world after a climate apocalypse, teen fiction style | Grist

Indeed, after reading all three books, I find only one sentence devoted to explaining what caused the apocalypse:

[The mayor] tells of the history of Panem. He lists the disasters, the droughts, the storms, the fires, the encroaching seas that swallowed up so much of the land, the brutal war for what little sustenance remained. The result was Panem, a shining Capitol ringed by thirteen districts … ”

Sounds a lot like global warming, though the books do not flesh out what happened.

Indonesian, Asian Airlines Mull Europe Boycott Over Carbon Row | The Jakarta Globe

A senior Indian government official with direct knowledge of talks between the EU and other countries on the issue told Reuters that India would soon ask local airlines not to share emissions data with the bloc or buy any carbon credits.

Meh. Hydro & nukes might be that good but I doubt Gaia shrines like wind farms and/or solar arrays are one-tenth the unit value of reliable coal- or gas-fired generation.
