Despite what has been written, talked about over the airwaves and typed out in the blogosphere, I can assure you that I am not the all-powerful perpetrator of a carefully orchestrated multi-continent, multi-billion dollar, decades in the making, scientific hoax...I was thrust into the media spotlight in 2009, when my work emails and those of my colleagues were stolen and broadcast around the globe. The contents of our emails were cherry-picked and deliberately altered to completely change the actual meaning of our dialogue. The illegal theft of these emails was quickly manufactured into a media scandal by climate-change deniers and dubbed "Climategate." Deniers, backed by monied oil company and other fossil fuel interests, announced they had "proof positive" that climate change was a hoax.

What climate-change deniers conveniently forget is that in the years since Climategate, a dozen independent investigations have been conducted, including one by the National Science Foundation. Investigators have examined my emails and the emails of my colleagues. They have looked at our work product sideways, backwards, forwards, up and down. These dozen investigations all came to the same conclusion: There was no wrongdoing on the part of researchers. Despite unfair and unbalanced media coverage, our work met or exceeded scientific standards for excellence.

• Scientific fact: Most of the current warming trends we are recording are due to human activity—the burning of oil and other fossil fuels. The warming trends now being recorded are proceeding at a rapid and as of yet unseen rate.
