Unlike some other prominent snow and ice data centers, the National Ice Center doesn’t pretend that satellite data only extends back to 1979, the peak year for Arctic ice. There is a lot more ice in Baffin Bay this year, as well as in the Bering Sea. 1974 had more ice in the Barents Sea. Ice concentration in the East Siberian Sea is greater this year than it was in 1974.

There may be lots of chatter in these documents about the importance of democracy, but what we see here is UN personnel deciding in advance what solutions should be pursued. Ideas aren’t bubbling up from the grassroots. They’re being selected – and promoted – by UN personnel well in advance.
