The Planet Under Pressure conference - which drew some 3000 specialists and inspired more than 2 million ''tweets'' - was convened as something of a war-conference before the Rio+20 UN sustainability conference in June.

Its tone - as encapsulated by comments from Sir John Beddington, science adviser to the British government - reflected a shift away from ''solving the climate crisis'', Revkin observed in his blog, Dotearth.

Instead, it focused on strategies to manage climate risk by enhancing the capacity of populations to withstand extreme conditions, while not giving up on efforts to stem emissions.
