maribo: Dispatch from Kiribati: Can you "see" sea level rise?

I can point to many shorelines that don't look the same as they did seven years ago. The long answer, however, is that the change is quite often not what you might expect on a planet with a rising ocean. In many cases, there's more land.  The reason is that shorelines are constantly changing in response to natural variability and human disturbance, in addition to the global trend. That's the subject of my recent article in EOS and our video "Lessons of Bikeman".

I just came over from Perth to visit my home town Sydney. I got the Manly ferry today from Sydney city to Manly. Now I am 67 years old and I asked myself, "WHERE IS THIS GREAT SEA LEVEL RISE?". Nowhere to be see. OMG!
Are my eyes playing tricks on me? Golly those same harbor beaches are still there. The rock platforms are still there. They lie! They lie! They lie! And that's why they (the watermelons)hate us old guys. We know what existed in the past.
