Be 'climate smart', growers told | Horticulture Week

Growers told to adopt 'climate-smart agriculture' to avoid further worsening of climate change.

The Government's chief scientist, Professor Sir John Beddington, has called for growers to pursue "climate-smart agriculture" to avoid exacerbating climate change.

Speaking at the World Potato Congress in Edinburgh last week, he added that GM crops would have to be a part of the sustainable intensification of food production.

The Japanese government, busy trying to win parliamentary approval for its proposed sales tax hike, has so far been lukewarm on the United Nation’s “Rio Earth Summit” in Brazil on June 20-22, when politicians, businesses and non-governmental organizations from around the world will try to thrash out standards for sustainable development.

The trees have been called the lungs of the Earth

True enough. Lungs take oxygen from the atmosphere and release carbon dioxide into it. Tree do likewise nocturnally.

and that’s far more than just a metaphor: they absorb more than 2 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide per year, return oxygen in exchange and help regulate the climate of the Western Hemisphere in the process.

Diurnally, perhaps but that is insignificant compared with oceanic exchange and savannah grasslands, come to think of it. This is typical bunny-hugger twaddle of no consequence. Ironically it was probably printed on paper made from rainforest fiber (no reason it shouldn’t be either, except that it is meaningless emotional enviro-pap).
