Eastern Idaho wheat crop damaged by June frost | capitalpress.com
Growers throughout Eastern Idaho are discovering patches of their winter wheat crops with damaged, white heads and missing kernels, a problem they attribute to a June 7 frost.
Ken Morgan, a merchandiser with Moreland Grain and Seed Co. near Blackfoot, said most growers in the region are anticipating winter wheat yield reductions of between 10 and 20 percent. Morgan knows of one grower who fears his yields will be cut in half.
In an ironic twist with a scorching heatwave expected to descend on the state in the coming days, Lexington and Jackson both set or tied record low temperatures for the date Tuesday morning.
Lexington saw a morning temperature of 52 degrees, tying the old mark set in 1958. Jackson checked in at 54 degrees, beating the old record of 56 set in 1990.
