LaHood Will Join Airlines to Protest EU Carbon-Emissions Limits - Bloomberg

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood today is set to join carriers including Delta Air Lines Inc. (DAL) and AMR Corp. (AAMRQ) to protest European Union greenhouse-gas limits the U.S. companies say may cost them more than $3.1 billion by 2020.

LaHood is scheduled to testify at a Senate Commerce Committee hearing on the plan that would force U.S. airlines to account for emissions on flights to and from EU airports. The restrictions give Europe’s regulators jurisdiction over global aviation, Nancy Young, vice president of environmental affairs at Airlines for America, a trade group representing U.S. carriers, said she will tell the committee.

...“If a U.S. aircraft touches Europe in any way, they say they have jurisdiction for the entire flight,” Young said in an interview. “It’s amazing what the EU thinks it can do.”

What environmentalists can learn from conservatives, and Vice Versa - Energy and the Environment - AEI

Wealthier is healthier and cleaner. We’ve known this for some time, but it bears repeating: poorer societies cannot afford environmental protection, and they rank it lower than meeting their other needs for housing, food, education, healthcare, etc. Until they’re wealthy, they will consume environmental resources without much regard to aesthetics or future generations. Making people wealthier is the ultimate environmental act.
