Stanford's George Shultz on energy: It's personal
Shultz is confident that when the time is right conservatives will support a carbon tax, for a number of reasons....you distribute all the revenue from the carbon tax in some fashion back to taxpayers, so there is no fiscal drag on the economy...A lot of people seem to be scoffing at the idea of global warming, but reality will catch up with them.

I'm obliged to Mr. Schultz for explaining a puzzling point: why do those who talk about energy independence in practice oppose every attempt to achieve it? The answer is that "energy independence" is code for de-industrialization.
