The resident grizzly population is actually the result of a late spring not a warming arctic. The northwest passage narrows as it flows between Victoria Island and mainland Canada, at some points it is only 25 miles wide. There is an abundance of barrenground grizzlies near Paulatuk and Kugluktuk. One spring some of these grizzlies just walked across the ice to Victoria Island. With plenty of habitat and pretty available, there was not much reason to go back.
