Polar bears originated 5 million years ago per new DNA research - National Paeleontology | Examiner.com
The researchers determined that polar bears diverged from their original black bear ancestor between four and five million years ago.
...
During periods of warmer worldwide weather, polar bears and black bears interbred producing some of the brown bear species that are present today. Other brown bear species are direct descendants of black bears. ABC brown bears from southeastern Alaska were found to be much more genetically related to polar bears than other brown bear species in North America.

Polar bear durability in periods of climate change is a hopeful sign for continued persistence of the polar bear species during present climate change but the researchers are dubious that polar bears can survive the loss of territory that has accompanied present day climate change.

Polar bears may disappear in the future as they move from northern territories and breed with brown and black bears like they did in ancient times.

CFL Bulbs May Pose Risk to Skin
Two years ago, if I wanted to, I could have gone into a grocery store and purchased one of those old school incandescent bulbs. In a few years, if the new efficiency standard for light bulb remains the law of the land, I will no longer be able to do so. The number of new light bulbs invented in the interim is irrelevant to the fact that I can no longer go and purchase that old bulb. These policies restrict consumer choice, regardless of the fact that consumer choices are constantly expanding due to a growing economy (or due to a misguided policy that mandates efficiency improvements).
