NJ environmental group blames global warming for extreme weather | Courier-Post | courierpostonline.com
Environment New Jersey’s study found an overall trend that the biggest rainstorms and snowstorms are getting bigger, particularly in New England, which in this study includes New Jersey. According to the study, intense rainstorms and snowstorms are happening 85 percent more often than they were in 1948.

That figure was a head-scratcher for David A. Robinson, New Jersey’s climatologist, although he hadn’t yet seen the report. There is no doubt “we are seeing these extremes” nationally, but Robinson is apprehensive to draw conclusions from it.

“That’s the one thing we have to make clear when dealing with this; there’s a lot of subtleties to this,” he said. “If it was that clear and it jumped out at us, there would be more action.”

In a conference call with reporters Thursday afternoon, Elliott made clear one of the objectives of the report is to nudge political action, specifically for Gov. Chris Christie to get New Jersey back into the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, a multistate pollution-reduction pact that the state pulled out of last year. Environment New Jersey is involved in a lawsuit against the state over the withdrawal, contending that it had done so illegally.

"My bill would reduce carbon emissions, and it returns all the money to consumers and deficit reduction  [so who pays for all the bureaucrats to design and administer the program?  Who pays for all the related litigation?]," said McDermott, a member of the House's tax-writing Ways and Means committee.

"We've been through this debate for years and the American public has rejected an energy tax every time," said Republican Senator James Inhofe.

"It's time for my friends on the other side of the aisle finally to get through the grieving process on cap-and-trade, move on from these failed, dead policies, and begin to embrace the enormous potential of America's abundant energy resources."
