I think the science community 'gets' that the bandwidth of the American (and global) public is pretty packed right now: economy, deficit, and election; and for some the climate discussion must seem old. But these events need to get on people's radar. Our planet is trying to get our attention.

Timmy fall down the well?

When Timmy got into trouble, Lassie would run and get help - but all she can do is bark, since she's a dog, see? And somehow from her barking (which was the same as usual...) the person she was barking at would be able to figure out that Timmy was in trouble somewhere...

So the joke is - the dog barks at someone, and the person says something like, "What's that, Lassie? Timmy fell down a well?" - which is an odd interpretation of a dog's barking, but it was necessary to tell the story on this old cheesy TV show.
