In general, Sauchyn has noticed a series of 60-year cycles over the past 1,000 years with about half of each cycle comprised of drier periods.

Because of the vast fluctuations in temperature and water supply on the Prairies, Sauchyn said it can be tricky to discern where naturally occurring climate change ends and people-created climate change begins. One of the most obvious signs that people are having a devastating and permanent impact on the world climate is the disappearance of glacier ice - the reason the conference is being held where it is.  [If part of a glacier melts, how is it "obvious" that CO2 was the cause?]
